Excursion Details
Wednesday 7th June 2017 — Ribblesdale

Leaders: Mik Cardus (Unit Manager Tarmac, Dry Rigg) Gary Jaques (Unit Manager Tarmac, Arcow) and Bill Fraser (Leeds Geological Association).

Purpose:

These quarries both work steeply dipping and folded rocks of Silurian age; Dry Rigg the Horton Formation, Arcow the Austwick Formation. Rocks and structures will be viewed and examined and quarry operations explained. At Dry Rigg Quarry, which is surrounded on one side by Swarth Moor SSSI this will, dependant on operations, involve a walk into the quarry which has steep slopes as it works to a depth of 90 metres. At Arcow Quarry the newly installed railhead will seen. If time permits a visit to nearby Newfield Crag will be made to see the spectacular turbidites.

Sunday 25th June 2017 — The Chalk at Flamborough Head: on Foot and by Boat

Leader: Paul Hildreth.

Purpose:

The morning session will be an examination of the stratigraphy of the lowest beds of the Burnham Chalk Formation (Upper Cretaceous, Turonian) including various flint forms at North Landing Flamborough and, if tides and conditions permit the topmost beds of the underlying Welton Chalk Formation. The afternoon session will be a boat trip from North Landing to Speeton and return. This will allow a view of the Chalk succession down to the Red Chalk and a close up of the Staple Nook deformation feature on the RSPB reserve at Bempton cliffs.

Saturday 29th July 2017 — The Geology and Landscape of Baildon Moor

Leader: Dr Gareth Martin, Geomorphologist, Leeds Geological Association and West Yorkshire Geological Trust.

Purpose:

A leisurely walk of 6.5kms 4miles max, depending on conditions on and around Baildon Moor to look at various Carboniferous rocks, its rich geological, geomorphological and industrial heritage of quarries and abundant bell pits.

Saturday 12th August 2017 — Yoredale Cyclothems and Mineralisation

Leader: Brian Young, Honorary Research Fellow, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Durham. (Formally of BGS).

Purpose:

A walk of 8 kms along well graded woodland and moorland paths and minor roads, including a shortish steep ascent and similar descent, taking us along a stream section through 3-4 well exposed cyclothems within the Alston Formation of the Carboniferous Yoredale Group. Numerous features related to the area's formerly important lead and iron mining industry will be seen, together with several exposures of features of structural and mineralogical interest, including one of the most spectacular and instructive sites at which typical Northern Pennine mineralisation may be seen. The walk also provides good opportunities to relate the geological features to the local and wider, Pennine landscape, together with some interesting and regionally important woodland and moorland.

Sunday 3rd September 2017   —   Castleton: Carbonate Platform Margins

Leader: Dr Cathy Hollis, Manchester University.

Purpose:

An examination of the sedimentology of the northern margin of the Derbyshire Platform in the Castleton area. In the Lower Carboniferous, this region was located on the margin of a steeply dipping carbonate platform. Present day exposure within disused quarries and along public footpaths allows a cross section of facies from the platform top, across the platform margin and into the basin to be examined. The trip will involve walking on rough, but well-marked paths between Castleton, Cave Dale and Pin Dale roughly 3.5 miles.
